Why ‘A Shot in the Dark’ is Essential for Fans of ‘The POX’

Revisiting a Not-So-New Story

It gives me great pleasure to introduce a NOT so NEW book, which may sound unusual at first. What does that mean exactly? “A Shot in the Dark,” releasing in January 2026, is actually the original version of my debut novel, “The POX,” which was published in 2023.

What Sets This Version Apart

This edition is longer than “The POX,” as it represents the story before I pared it down. While it shares many similarities with the previous version, it also stands apart because I incorporated more dialogue between characters. Although there are differences throughout, the ending remains largely unchanged.

Why Publish This Edition?

I decided to release this version because it is the story I originally intended to share. When I first self-published, I was a newcomer to the process and believed I needed to edit the manuscript drastically. As writers, we are often told that extensive editing is necessary, especially since it can be difficult for an unknown author to attract readers to a novel exceeding 500 pages. I edited the original work thoroughly, feeling pressure to conform to these expectations, since at the time—and even now—I am not a well-known figure in the literary world.

Significance and Growth

Both versions of “The POX” hold significant meaning for me as a writer. Each year, I continue to grow in my craft and have published multiple works. If you have read any of my writing, you may recognize my style and world-building efforts.

A New Perspective and Future Plans

If you enjoyed “The POX,” I encourage you to pick up this raw version. In some ways, it serves as an origin story—though not entirely, as I plan to write two additional books in the Pox series. Doctor Jack Spellman’s journey is far from over.

“A Shot in the Dark” will be available on January 20, 2026, at all major online retailers.
