With only one month remaining until the release of my forthcoming memoir, “Runaway Shame,” I am pleased to share insights into this deeply personal and candid work. The book explores the persistent shame that has accompanied me for many years—a weight that remains present despite ongoing efforts to overcome it, even amidst the love and support of my wife and daughter.

In these pages, I discuss the various forms shame can take in one’s life, underscoring that it is not a singular experience. My journey toward understanding shame has broadened my perspective on the daily struggles faced by others and the profound impact such feelings can have. Therefore, I refrain from offering dismissive advice such as “just get over it”—words that, while often well-intentioned, can inadvertently cause further harm.
Through reflection, I recognize that much of this shame stems from childhood experiences and, all too frequently, from mistreatment by those close to us. Although many people face trauma and no childhood is without its challenges, it’s important to acknowledge that outward appearances do not always reflect internal realities.
I have strived to break these patterns within my own family, particularly for my daughter, ensuring she receives not only love and care but also respect and kindness. As she grows older, she has begun to notice differences between our circumstances and those of her peers—a phenomenon I identify as “comparison shame.”
My intention with this memoir is to foster greater understanding and self-awareness, both for myself and for readers. Years from now, I hope to revisit these reflections and consider how my relationship with shame may have changed. At present, shame significantly influences my life, contributing to periods of depression and suicidal ideation. Nonetheless, “Runaway Shame” offers more than just personal testimony; it provides thoughtful analysis and facts regarding this complex emotion.
Remarkably, the writing process for this book flowed swiftly after completing my autobiography, as I felt compelled to continue sharing my experiences and insights.
For those interested, “Runaway Shame” will be available at major online retailers beginning December 1st. Thank you for your support.
Wishing you an engaging reading experience.
