Celebrating a Life: Remembering Mom on Her Birthday

Happy Birthday, Mom — Remembering Linda Gutierrez

Today you would have been celebrating your 67th birthday, Mom. It has been ten years since you left us, yet your absence is felt every single day. I can still imagine how simple and beautiful your birthday would have been — all of us gathered at Olive Garden, your favorite place. You never needed fancy restaurants; you just wanted family around you.

I picture myself, Mikaylah, your granddaughter, Delia, Jennifer, and Dad sitting together, sharing a meal, laughing, and celebrating you. I know you would have loved that.

Your Strength, Even Through Hardship

Your health was never perfect, even when I was a young boy, but you always carried yourself with a smile. You faced hardship with a quiet strength that I didn’t fully understand until I grew older and faced my own.

You were a giver in every sense — the kind of mother who would give her last dime without hesitation. You loved deeply, and you showed it through sacrifice, kindness, and presence.

The Joy You Found in Family

Mikaylah was the joy of your life — your first and only granddaughter. You were proud of Jennifer and me, proud of what we accomplished, proud of the adults we became.

It still amazes me how life can change without warning. We truly believed you would be with us for many more years, but God had a different plan. Knowing you gave your heart to Jesus brings me comfort, because I believe with certainty that you are in Heaven.

The Grief That Lives Beside Gratitude

I won’t pretend it’s always easy. There are moments when I feel anger or jealousy seeing families with their mothers, fathers, and grandparents still here — celebrating milestones you never got to reach.

And yet, each time Mikaylah asks to go to Olive Garden, I smile. She loves it just like you did — a little reminder that your spirit still touches our lives.

I also honor her other grandmother, Mama Conchi, who lives in El Salvador. She has shared her own love and strength with Mikaylah, and we are grateful for the moments she’s had with her.

Your Spirit Lives On

I look forward to the day I see you again in Heaven. Until then, I will continue to honor you, remember you, and keep your spirit alive.

Truthfully, I see so much of you in Mikaylah — in her expressions, her sweetness, her way of caring. Sometimes it feels like I’m speaking to you through her.

I believe our loved ones in Heaven watch over us like angels, even though Jesus is our ultimate protector. And I believe you are one of those angels for us.

Love you always, Joseph
