Celebrating My Father’s Quiet Strength on His 70th Birthday

Today marks a major milestone — my father Moses turns 70. I don’t often speak about my father, not because he wasn’t present, but because he has always been a quiet, steady figure in my life. Even after my parents divorced when I was five, he remained a constant. Some of my fondest childhood memories come from those every‑other‑weekend visits to his home or to my grandparents’ house, where he lived for most of his life.

A Quiet Strength

My father never talked much about his hardships, and I can only imagine what he carried. I’ve only seen him cry once in my life — I was a child asking him to take me to Chuck E. Cheese. I didn’t understand the reason behind his tears then, and maybe I still don’t fully understand now. But that moment stayed with me.

He wasn’t the type to give fatherly advice or long speeches. He wasn’t talkative. But he showed up in his own way. He took my sister and me to Toys “R” Us, then Chuck E. Cheese, and afterward we’d end up at my grandparents’ house, left to our own devices to watch TV late into the night. Those small routines became the shape of our relationship.

A Life of Work and Responsibility

My father worked hard — truly hard. He spent his career as an industrial radiologist, a skill he learned in the Army Reserves. He never remarried after the divorce, never really dated, and lived most of his life focused on working and maintaining his home. To each their own path, and that was his.

There were moments in my life where I struggled, and I’m thankful he was there for those. But for the most part, I had to navigate life on my own. Becoming a father myself helped me understand the battles he must have faced — the weight of responsibility, the quiet endurance required to keep a family afloat.

Where He Is Today

Today my father lives with my sister Jennifer, my brother‑in‑law David, their two dogs, and their cat. He’s healthier than I’ve seen him in years, having lost over 30 pounds. I’m proud of him for that. And in just a few months, he’ll welcome a new grandson — a blessing for all of us, and especially for him.

A Wish for the Years Ahead

I wish my father many more years of health, peace, and joy. Seventy is a milestone that deserves celebration, reflection, and gratitude. I’m happy for him, proud of him, and thankful for the role he has played in my life — even in the quiet ways.

Happy 70th Birthday, Dad.
