Palantir’s Role in Modern Surveillance: Understanding the Threats

Palantir is building the infrastructure for a surveillance society—here’s where it shows up, who it serves, and how to fight back

Palantir doesn’t need to be famous to be powerful. It’s quietly wiring its software into the systems that decide who gets watched, who gets targeted, who gets caged, and who gets shut out of basic stability—from immigration enforcement to policing and, increasingly, the workplace. This is what “data-driven” control looks like when it’s scaled up, privatized, and sold back to the public as safety.

Why this matters

When governments and large institutions centralize data, the result is rarely neutral. It concentrates power: to monitor, to predict, to punish, and to make life-changing decisions behind a screen. If we don’t draw lines now—on what data can be collected, how it can be linked, and who gets to use it—those lines will be drawn for us, by contractors whose business model depends on deeper access and fewer limits.

Palantir is a defense-technology company co-founded by Peter Thiel and led by CEO Alex Karp. Karp has been explicit about what he wants Silicon Valley to become: an arm of the national security state. In his 2025 book The Technological Republic, he calls it a “moral debt,” writing: “The engineering elite of Silicon Valley has an affirmative obligation to participate in the defense of the nation.” Translation: build the tools—then wrap them in patriotism.

What is Palantir?

Palantir sells data-integration software: the kind that pulls information from many places, stitches it together, and turns it into an operational map of people’s lives. The name is not subtle. A palantr is an “all-seeing” stone in The Lord of the Rings. That’s the brand—and the warning: power built on seeing more than anyone should be allowed to see.

Where Palantir is embedded

Palantir’s footprint is already spread across core public institutions. These are not small experiments—they are systems that shape budgets, enforcement, and life outcomes:

  • U.S. Army and the Pentagon
  • NSA and FBI
  • ICE and Border Patrol
  • International partners (including reported work with the UK’s National Health Service)

The real danger isn’t one contract—it’s the architecture of consolidation. Link enough data sets together (health, finances, location, contacts, work history) and you don’t just “analyze” people; you can profile them, sort them, flag them, and move against them at speed. And when those decisions are made inside proprietary systems, the public is told to trust a black box.

Since 2003, Palantir has built its business by embedding with law enforcement and national security agencies. That should set off alarms: a private company designing the plumbing for state power, with limited transparency and weak democratic oversight. Add the revolving door and the money trails around public contracting, and it becomes harder to pretend this is only about “better software.”

How surveillance tech shows up in immigration enforcement

Palantir’s work with U.S. immigration enforcement is one of the clearest examples of what this technology enables. Data systems that connect addresses, relationships, employment information, and investigative notes make it easier to find people—and harder for communities to protect themselves. The result is a pipeline where information becomes targeting.

When raids happen, the cost is not abstract. People disappear into detention, families scramble, jobs are lost, and fear spreads through entire neighborhoods. Tools that centralize leads and investigative data can make these operations faster and wider—while the public is left with almost no visibility into error rates, safeguards, or who is accountable when the system gets it wrong.

It’s not just borders: workplaces and healthcare

This isn’t only about borders. The same logic is creeping into workplaces and public services: collect more data, automate more decisions, and call it “efficiency.” In large workplaces—including health systems—data tools can shape staffing, scheduling, productivity scoring, and disciplinary decisions. If you can’t see what the system is measuring, you can’t challenge what it’s doing to you.

Listen to the sales pitch and you’ll hear the same comforting words: “AI modernization,” “security,” “innovation,” “cost savings.” But the pattern is familiar: deeper access to public data, long-term lock-in to proprietary platforms, and fewer meaningful ways for ordinary people to ask, “What are you collecting on me—and who else gets it?”

What Palantir’s software actually does

Here’s the core: Palantir helps institutions pull data from many sources, standardize it, link it, and use it to drive operations. Gotham is often associated with defense and intelligence customers; Foundry is marketed more broadly for civilian and enterprise use. Different branding, same premise: connect everything and make it actionable.

Palantir doesn’t have to “invent” new data. We hand it over every day through apps, purchases, phones, and online behavior. The shift is what happens next: when scattered records become a single, searchable profile that can follow you across systems. That’s where power concentrates—and where mistakes, bias, and abuse can scale.

Palantir prides itself on embedding closely with clients. That’s sold as “execution.” In practice, it can mean a contractor sitting near the levers of enforcement—helping translate institutional priorities into software workflows, dashboards, and alerts. The closer the vendor gets to the mission, the harder it becomes to separate “technical support” from political power.

Why critics call it dangerous

Palantir keeps showing up wherever institutions want to sort people into categories—risk, threat, suspicion, eligibility, priority—and then act on those categories. In high-stakes settings, that can mean:

  • More surveillance with less transparency
  • More false positives and fewer meaningful appeals
  • More automated enforcement aimed at the most vulnerable
  • More normalization of “collect it all” as standard governance

Palantir argues its tools are used lawfully, with auditing and safeguards, and that its work is essential to national security. But “lawful” is a low bar in a country where surveillance powers have expanded for decades. The question communities keep asking is simpler: who benefits, who pays the price, and who gets a say?

Palantir’s early backing included investment from In-Q-Tel, the CIA’s venture-capital arm. This was never a neutral startup story. From the beginning, Palantir was built for the post-9/11 surveillance era—and it has grown alongside it.

And like so many contractors, Palantir operates close to political power: procurement offices, agency leadership, consultants, lobbyists. When public money and private influence blur together, “oversight” turns into a checkbox. That’s why disclosure, guardrails, and community pressure aren’t optional—they’re the only counterweight.

Palantir is not alone. It’s part of a wider industry of cloud providers, data brokers, and analytics firms feeding government systems. Piece by piece, that ecosystem builds a world where decisions are faster, harsher, and more automated—and where ordinary people are expected to live under permanent digital suspicion.

What communities can do

There is a growing movement to stop Palantir from becoming the default operating system of public life.   • As consumers: ask what tools companies use to profile, track, or automate decisions about people.
  • As workers: if surveillance or invasive analytics tools are being introduced at your workplace, push for transparency, guardrails, and (where applicable) bargaining language that limits data misuse.
  • As community members: show up to city council, county, and oversight meetings to question contracts and demand public reporting on how data is collected, shared, and retained.

Big tech wants you to feel powerless. Don’t. Contracts get approved in public meetings. Budgets get voted on. Institutions respond when people show up, organize, and refuse to accept secrecy as normal. Make them explain the system. Make them justify the data. Make them choose: community trust or surveillance infrastructure.
